glucomannan

Glucomannan, the miracle fibre that makes you feel full?

I heard about a miracle fibre that could reduce belly fat?

Glucomannan, a natural, water-soluble dietary fibre extracted from the roots of the elephant yam, also known as Konjac, I wanted to know a little more about this ‘Konjac Glucomannan’, nature’s innovation, was it a scam?

China has been enjoying the benefits of this fibre, Konjac Glucomannan which they have used as food and medicine for over 2,000 years, as well as for food in Japan for more than 1,500 years and has a modest body of evidence to support its claims.  It is about time we understand and learn about the marvels of this natural wonder.

Glucomannan comprises 40% of the dry weight of the elephant yam, which is originally from Southeast Asia. It has a long history of use in herbal mixtures and traditional foods like tofu, noodles, and konjac jelly.

There are some fascinating facts about Glucomannan which I think you will find interesting, it is obtained from the tubers (roots) of various species of Amorphophallus, a source of a highly water-soluble fibre.  It has the exceptional ability to absorb liquid around 100 times its own volume, how cool is that.  Take for example, if you emptied a Glucomannan capsule into a small glass of water, the entire thing turns into a gel, I think this is what makes this  so different. This unique property is believed to mediate its effects on weight loss. At first I could not believe this, but the more I look into it the more fascinated I became.

If ingested, this magic ingredient ‘fills’ the stomach creating a gel like substance allowing the brain to feel it is ‘full’ and so remove hunger emotions, preventing overeating. This in turn lowers your food intake at your next meal therefore reducing your calorie intake. Satiety is also increased as it lasts longer in our stomach and delays emptiness. It reduces the absorption of protein and fat.  When I first came across this, I was so excited and was thinking along the lines of where this had been for most of my life.

I want to shout out aloud about this well-kept secret. So, in short Glucomannan can help people lose weight it has the following qualities:

  • It is very low in calories.
  • It fills up space in the stomach and gives the feeling of fullness (satiety), reducing food intake at a subsequent meal.
  • It delays emptying of the stomach, contributing to increased satiety.
  • Like other soluble fibres, it reduces the absorption of protein and fat.

Naturally, I was so curious about this that I had to try this for myself.  I was a bit sceptical about this and would not believe that it would work.  I am addicted to chocolate.  Could this be what I have waited for to help me overcome my addiction?

So I took the leap of faith and tried this natural fibre.  I was pleasantly surprised that it certainly did make me feel full for a few hours. In fact when I first took it, I felt so full that I did not think I could put another morsel in my mouth, I was not hungry and my chocolate cravings were put at bay.  However, it is not a miracle cure I still need to use will power and take responsibility for what I put in my mouth.

What’s more, Konjac Glucomannan powder in the context of an energy-restricted diet, contributes to weight loss, it is proven to reduce body weight and aids the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels and is confirmed by EFSA (European Food Safety Agency).

Glucomannan has other health benefits too.  It contributes to maintenance of normal blood Cholesterol Levels.  Glucomannan helps with the treatment of constipation.  Glucomannan can help with Rhumatoid Arthiritis.

Having learnt all this about Glucomannan, I wanted to share my experience and let everyone else experience this for themselves.  We all have different bodies and respond to ingredients in different ways.

After feeling the effects of this first hand I wanted this to be an integral part of the shakes I have helped develop to aid in slimming down.  mySisterhood supplements, have introduced a meal replacement shake, incorporating this amazing ingredient with other super-foods like green tea extract, aloe vera, vitamins for healthy hair, skin and nails combined with black seed, an all in one product.

Don’t just take my word for it.  Try it for yourselves!
