I have never been a fan of hot drinks, especially tea, but my husband is a raving fan of hot drinks, especially in cold weather, where it can help him keep warm and relax. Now I wanted to join this tea drinking group. So I had to find an alternative. I tried coffee and again could not agree with its taste. I know that some people think that there is something wrong with me! Especially the hard core coffee lovers but I can live with that. Anyway I came across green tea, at first I did not like it. So I started taking green tea with other flavours like mint or lemon etc. Now I can go to a café and enjoy a hot drink with others.
I now drink a lot of green tea and have heard that green tea has been described as one of the healthiest beverages on the planet. I had no idea as to why it has been afforded that title so, having a thirst for knowledge I had to carry out some research and I believe that it certainly fits that title.
I was amazed to find that there are numerous epidemiological studies on green tea, they show that regular consumption of green tea has a net positive effect on overall health. Wow!
There are green tea supplements available on the market and I found that even as a supplement, green tea can be a worthwhile addition to your dietary habits.
For me personally, I was interested in seeing if green tea can help me slim down. Many studies have shown that green tea can increase fat burning and help you lose weight especially during exercise, how exciting especially as I enjoy drinking it.
I was excited to find that there are studies where green tea has consistently been shown to boost metabolic rate. Furthermore, it was shown that fat burning can be increased in the body. Several studies have found the significance in the reduction of body fat especially around the abdominal area. I believe for me this is one of the reasons why I was trimming down with regular consumption.
Like I said previously that green tea has other benefits too, contains caffeine which is a stimulant. This is not at the level found in coffee but enough to provide positive affects without some of the negatives associated with too much caffeine. Caffeine impacts by blocking Adenosine (an inhibitory neurotransmitter). This action increases the firing of neurons, improving the concentration of neurotransmitters like dopamine. Overall caffeine effects various aspects of brain functioning such as improved mood reaction times, and memory. So, now you can enjoy the benefits of caffeine.
You may not know this but apart from improving brain function green tea may also protect our brains. The catechin compounds in green tea can protect our new rounds and therefore lower the risk of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s
Green tea also contains the amino acid L-theanine. This combined with caffeine has a synergistic affect improving brain function.
Green tea is full of powerful antioxidants such as Polyphenols. One of the most powerful of its antioxidants is known as EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate). This has been shown to have positive effects in treating many diseases, and could even reduce the risk of cancer, including breast and colorectal cancer.
Green tea can improve insulin sensitivity, reduce blood sugar levels, and even lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The catechin compounds may inhibit the growth of bacteria and some viruses. This can lower the risk of infections and improve dental health.
Green tea has also shown to prove some of the main risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. It increases the antioxidant capability of the blood which then protects from heart disease.
As you can see there are various benefits to consuming green tea. There are lots of supplements available on the market. When deciding what important powerful ingredients to incorporate in shakes developed to help with weight loss I had to include green tea extracts. I wanted to include as many good quality superfoods to help with overall health whilst help fighting that fat
